Groupon purchased of 5 month old Malaysia startup Groupsmore, is quite likely one of the biggest news to hit Malaysian startup scene. With the purchase of Octozen by Facebook and Friendster being brought by MOL, there seem to be a ray of hope for local entrepreneurs who wants to make it big. We spoke to newly appointed Groupon Malaysia CEO about the excitement of this new acquisition.

Joel Neoh is the founder of Youth Malaysia, a former model(appeared in the covers of Men’s Health, winner of Malaysia business reality show the Firm and co founder of Youth Asia.

MYE:Congratulation Joel on being the new Groupon Malaysia CEO. We understand Groupsmore was a property of Youth Asia who also runs the newly rebranded Says.my, what will be difference now that Groupsmore will be Groupon Malaysia?
Joel Neoh: Basically Khailee will be running YouthAsia side of thing and I will be handling day to day of Groupon Malaysia. For Groupsmore, we’ve been operating with less than 10 people over the past 5 months. In order to spur growth, we’ll be growing our team significantly over the next few months. On a personal side this is also a great opportunities for cross learnings from other groupon companies globally.

MYE: There are many other Groupon clones in the market in Malaysia. We have tracked close to 20 with a lot of them very small. I get an email almost every week since November on people telling me they are going to set up a clone. How will this effect the other players in the market?

JL: We’ve always been focused on getting our value proposition right to our members. this does not change with the Groupon acquisition. At the end of the day, our members comes first as they make the call on whether to continue using groupsmore or other sites.

MYE: Will you work with other companies that have been purchased such as beeconomic?
JL: At this point of time I don’t have any indication of how closely we will work – but it is very likely. I look fwd to working with the rest of groupon companies, as most of them are run by young successful entrepreneurial individuals too.

MYE:What can you tell us about the deal?
JL: Sorry but because of the agreement, can’t disclose the numbers — but this deal has put Malaysia on the map of tech startups (we were in lots of global tech review sites eg. thenextweb.com, techeye.net, penn-olson.com —- and this really helps in generating interest of global companies, vcs, investors take notice of our Malaysia social technology scene. There are many very cool startups here in malaysia that needs more visibility + funding.

Currently members of Groupsmore team will be sent to UK and the Valley for trainings of operational training. Groupon is generally viewed as the fastest growing company in the world. They have been valued at close to USD4 billions and most recently walked away from an acquisition by google. They have been aggressively looking at expansion around the world by purchasing top players in the local market such as Beeconomic in Singapore, Atlastpos in Taiwan and uBuyibuy in Hong Kong. The Malaysian deal was done in record time of 5 months. Which clone will they buy next in Asia?

Here goes a story about Youth Jam and Jazzada Solution. I founded this company with my partner Ada Ho which is also born in 1990. This company was established in line with the objectives to cultivate Penang Youths with creativity skills, developing positive changes in the mindset that youths have what it takes to go global. Introducing creative mega youth projects, ‘never-done-before’ ideas, having the ‘we-do-not-copy, we-ImProViSe’ concept, showering youths with knowledge. Here are some of the lesson learn from organizing one of the largest youth event in Penang.

1. IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA THEN JUST DO IT !

When I first started Youth Jam, I remembered that I was only 19 years old. When I had the idea of running this project, many told me that I was crazy. Fairly enough my age did not side me nor my financial roots. I had only a few hundred ringgit in pocket but a big dream in mind. After all the hassle and bustle gearing up youth volunteers, talking to brands, getting sponsorships and tied down government agencies and schools to work with me on this event, finally the outcome was superbly fruitful. So the lesson that I learned from organizing Youth Jam is that, despite of being young at age do not let it be an obstacle to you. Go for what ever you can think of and put that into action. After all, actions speak louder than words eh? *winks

2. KNOCK ON EVERY OPPORTUNITY

During the meetings with cooperate brands, I faced faces that goes like, “What on earth does this kid thinks she is doing?” or “Ahmm, am I in the wrong meeting room?”. Well, things like that happens frequently to me. Reality check, who would put faith on a young person with no experiences at all? But the lesson here is to never stop knocking on doors. Seek for every opportunity that is and are available. You will never know until you try ! Finally, Youth Jam’09 secured large sponsorships with Telecom Malaysia and Youth Jam’10 secured larger sponsorships with DiGi Telecommunications.

3. DON’T TRUST ANYONE BUT YOURSELF

Usually when you come to a stage from people calling you “crazy” to ” I want to work with you”, this is when you have to be careful. It is just human’s nature to seek for benefits. So, be smart and not let people use you and divert you from your objectives. Create a win-win solution instead of agreeing upon their terms. Usually when things like that kicks in, let your instinct take over.

First it was YouthMalaysia when it was only Joel Neoh. After it was YouthSays.com with Khailee Ng under the company Youth Asia. Together they have organized 2 mega youth oriented events such as Youth 09 and Youth 10 which attracted ten of thousands of youth around Malaysia. Youth Asia then went on to co create SEAChange which is a South East Asia movement of youth. As of last Friday, YouthSays is no more, it is now just says.my. We took time to talk to Khailee about the rebranding of one of Malaysia’s more prominent internet brand.

MYE:So what happened? Are you no longer gonna focus on youth?
Khailee: It has been rebranded to says.my. The shorter catchier domain name. More importantly, we first started with the idea of doing something relevant and disruptive for this generation. we picked the word youth to help communicate it but soon realized that being young people ourselves, the word ‘youth’ seemed to suggest teens, instead of young adults. the focus is still the same, because malaysia’s population is 65% under the 35 anyway, but giving a more neutral name like SAYS.my makes it easier to accomodate and relate to more people!

MYE:What is the diff between Says and Youthsays?
Khailee: Right now, it’s just a rebranding, but a few new features are in the pipeline.
(Note: There is now session divided into Campus, Young Professional and more recently School)

MYE:Will there be a Youth11?
Khailee: As usual, each year, the festival is heavily dependent on the investment of sponsors . We can’t confirm at this point.

MYE: What will we be expecting to see in the next 6 month.
Khailee: I think malaysia will rain a bit less. There will be more internet penetration. Malaysian will continue to go to shopping malls. Justin beiber’s concert will be a big hit. from our side, I’ll let you know when we’ve got something rolled out. Right now its to really put in the work to make SAYS.my rock.

Check out a video of Khailee explaining the transition.
Entrepreneurs.my came to understand such initiative by Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) and recommends it as a great platform to start with, the Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards 2011.

The GSEA program is the premier international award for undergraduate students who own and run their own businesses while attending post-secondary. Student entrepreneurs are nominated to compete against their peers by presenting their businesses to a panel of judges with diverse experiences in entrepreneurship.

Since 1998, the GSEA program has celebrated the success of hundreds of student entrepreneurs from 33 active countries. The program encourages students to pursue their passions while building the foundation for a solid economic future through regional and global cash awards competitions. The Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) is the facilitator of the GSEA program. This connection allows student entrepreneurs to access a network that understands passion, struggle, drive and success.
