Here is an entrepreneurial idea I conceived of in 1998 which I'd like to share with you.

Our correspondent interviewed Mr. Thargaret Matcher who has recently been
dismissed from his post as General Manager of Britannia plc due to a
disagreement over his management style which greatly displeased the
shareholders. Mr. Matcher had some enterprising ideas which he has not been
able to carry out in Britannia plc and decided to come to Malaysia which he
has visited once previously on a business trip. His impression of Malaysia is
that it is a wonderful place to try out new and imaginative ideas in business
and that Malaysia is a wonderful place for entreprenuers to realise their
dreams. Mr. Matcher, condemned Mrs. Michelle Hazelbum, a former Divisional
Manager of Defense, who led the management coup which resulted in his (Mr.
Matcher's) dismissal. He added that it was fortunate for Britannia plc that a
moderate Divisional Manager, Ms. Jean Minor was elected General Manager of
Britannia plc by the management committee.
Mr. Matcher's enterprising idea is to build a network of privatized prison in
Malaysia where there will be minimum interference by the state. Prisoners of
means can choose their prisons which charge fees for everything, much like an
expensive nursing home or private hospital. Some private hospitals in Malaysia
cost as much as a hotel to stay in and provide hotel like facilities.
In this private prison, facilities will be like a hotel, standard cells will
be as posh and spacious with room service, cable TV, IDD telephone, computer
terminals which enable access to stock, commodity and property market
information, FM/AM radio sets, piped in music, hot and cold showers, fridge
and drinks galore. The deluxe cells will have personal computers, video and
stereo systems in addition to the facilities provided to the standard cells
and the penthouse cells will have large screen video projectors which project
the video image on a screen on the wall, making this the first facility in the
world offering personal cinema. The proposed prison will have a business
centre offering the latest in telex, fax, and word-processing facilities
including computer terminals offering direct on-line access to the world's
stock market information so that the prisoner can continue with his business
activities without leaving prison.
The a'la carte menu will offer superb cuisine prepared by a panel of chefs
from several countries with a choice of select wines served on bone china and
eaten with silverware cutlery laid on a table covered with the finest linen
table cloth and served by a personal waiter.
All the prison warders will be required to hold a diploma in hotel management.
All these facilities and services will cost the prisoner a great deal of money
and all major credit cards will be accepted. The only difference is that the
occupant is a prisoner and cannot leave until the sentence has been served.
For prisoners on death row, the convicted person will be given a choice of how
he or she wants to be executed and has to pay fees in advance (major credit
cards will be accepted) for the professional services of a doctor who has to
be in attendance, the executioner's fees, charges for the use of the execution
equipment and not to mention funeral expenses paid in advance including coffin
made to order. “All good business sense you know old chap”, Mr. Matcher
commented.
Freedom of choice; the hallmark of the free enterprise system is taken a step
further. Those sentenced to be flogged will now have the freedom to choose the
instruments of punishement such as cane, cat-o-nine tails, whip, horsewhip,
birch, etc. which will be used to perform the punishment including any kinky
ritual the prisoner wishes, for a fee of course. Not to miss an opportunity to
make even more money, the privatized prison will hold the whipping in an
auditorium in front of a paying audience. The proceeds will be split 50/50
between the prison and the prisoner. “Going to prison won't be so bad after
all you know, if you can afford it”, Mr. Matcher said. “For those who can't
afford it, there's always the state penitentiary or gaol”, he added.
Mr. Matcher is looking for a Malaysian joint venture partner to take part in
his ambitious project.
