The goal is to have developers building applications atop the Google App Engine platform. The event will include presentations on the major new features of Google App Engine and how to mashup App Engine with other web services.

Ikai Lan from Google Developer Relations team will be on hand to help and to answer questions throughout the event. You will also be supported by the developers from GTUG Kuala Lumpur, Python Malaysia & CodeAndroid Malaysia.

The hackathon is mainly aimed at developers. We will use the information shared at the event to build up a working Google App Engine application throughout the 2 days 1 night, which you can code along with us. On the other hand, if you already have a great idea for what to build, bring that idea along. Even better, bring along anything you can prepare ahead of time (sketches, designs, web page mock ups, etc.) and use the time and information provided to develop your idea into a working application, then share it with the world.

App Engine is the suggested development platform – which means you can code in Python orJava – you can build your application on anything you want, as long as it’s somehow using the Google stack. If you’re a Ruby fan, check out jRuby. If you want PHP, you might want to try Quercus, which runs PHP on Java. You can also use a wide range of Google tools and APIs for the creation of new applications, from its App Engine platform to services like Maps, Search and Android.

We will provide facilities, power, food and refreshments and experts to help you learn to use Google App Engine and write your application. Just bring your laptops, ideas and enthusiasm to complete the mix. Plus anything else you need to build an app (iPone or Android, books, etc). You can download development environments for App Engine. Best place to be prepared is at Google Code site.

Space is limited, so sign up now! [ http://goo.gl/uUWKQ ]
Contact Nazrul Kamaruddin at nazrul@gtugs.org for more information.Note: Facebook confirmation will not be used for final registration into the event. We will need
you to RSVP your attendance.

What’s the schedule?
[ Saturday ]
0800 – Registration & breakfast.
1000 – Presentation by Ikai Lan from Google Developer Relations team.

What is the Nexus series? Basically, as Google’s anointed phone for the year, this is the phone Google will put it’s branding behind a consumer device. They have so far done this 3 times with the G1 and Nexus One which are both built by HTC and now the Nexus S which Google have partnered with Samsung.

What I liked about the phone so far?

The 1 gig humming bird processor is snappy. It makes the Nexus One which is my primary phone feels sluggish.
There are also a lot of improvement to the display which spot a larger 4 inch displayed which is called the Contour Display. It has a resolution of 800 x 480 curved Super AMOLED and the best thing about it is not how sharp the images are, but it allows for better viewing under the bright Malaysian sun(the Nexus One is almost unviewable under the sun).

The Nexus S also don’t have any customized launcher and left it with a vanilla flavored Android user interface which I prefer.

The battery life seem to be a bit better but we have yet to stress test it properly with my regular routine of downloading podcast and listening to it on the phone.

There is also a front facing camera and near field communication or NFC which I have yet to find any application to use it.

On the down side.

The overall built of the phone seem a bit fragile and it does not have the solid feeling and finishing of the Nexus One of most HTC Android devices.

There is a lack of consistency in the phone design where the on and off button are at the right side of the phone while the search and the home button have been switched compare to the Nexus One. I thought Google would have tried to keep the user interface consistant.

The other thing which I find a bit annoying is the fact, the audio jack is located below.

This is the preliminary findings and we will be bringing you more test case of the Nexus S as part of the Maxis10 program.

As most would know by today, Google just set up a brand new Malaysia office. Although this would come as a surprise for most people, bloggers such as LiewCF have been speculating about this since former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former Malaysia Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi met in 2008. Google is not without it’s presents in Malaysia before the set up of the new office.

Hanson Toh, the sole person from Google in Malaysia have been with the company since September 2006 working as a Country Consultant. His primary role was focus at local content site and evangelizing Google Apps to both the public and private sector.

Since Google’s main bread and butter is Adwords, majority of it’s focus for the new office will be here to service clients such as 701panduan.com or Mudah. With control over 70 % of the search market in Malaysia, the company been seeing double digit growth in recent year.

The company have also been supportive over local content and developers. Google in Malaysia organized Google DevFest with the help of GTUG Kuala Lumpur (GTUGKL), an independent user group with an interest in Google technologies and this organization (disclosure). Nazroll, the founder of GTUGKL comment that this is a great move by Google hopefully we will see more activities in Malaysia by them.

On the Google App side, organization such as Open University Malaysia (OUM) which was established in August 2001, is one of the biggest users of Google Apps with over 65 thousands of its’ student using the service and I believe this would be another big by Google in Malaysia.

Google Malaysia country manager Sajith Sivanandan said that having a local presence will enable them to better engage Malaysian content producers and users. If you are interested in working for Google, you can visit www.google.com.my/jobs/. There are currently 6 jobs focusing on sales and one job in Marketing.
